Hey all, I posted a thread a while ago about taking a break from racing and selling some of my equipment. One of my bike sold pretty quickly, but the rest of my equipment has been sitting on various marketplaces for a while.
I have a time trial bike, and a bunch of different Wheels all for a good price. But nothing’s really been moving lately.
For those of you who are in the process of or have recently sold anything, have you had much success? I just want to get a feel on the overall market to see if it’s slowing down or if it’s just me LOL.
And no, the prices aren’t too high before you ask. I even say I’m willing to negotiate
I think it’s probably a combination of a few factors…lots of bike stuff is coming back in stock, winter is approaching, and there will likely be good black Friday sales.
I sold a few bikes early in the pandemic…they went quickly as it was a seller’s market. I’ve sold some smaller stuff (tires/parts) in the past 6 months and it definitely took longer.
Good points above, and let’s not forget the rather tentative nature of the economy at this point on top of all that. Deal or not, people may well be changing more to a “wait and see” approach with their budgets.
Smaller cheaper items on FB type groups. Larger items on eBay. Usually everything is less than half msrp. For me gone are the days of staying even on cost. I’m limiting losses but, I like to stay up with current tech so i do it to myself.
I mean, that’s not necessarily good news…but at least I’m not alone.
I’m trying to avoid eBay since they take a massive cut
Definitely not alone. I have not sold anything recently, but I actively watch our local CL and several FB markets. Stuff is moving far slower now, and many require one or more price reduction before I see much of it disappear. There may be a few items that are considered ‘hot’ and will move, but that seems like a rarity from what I see.
Misery loves company!
Just kidding, mostly. I’ve dropped prices to the lowest I can go and even say I’ll negotiate. I guess I will just be patient! Maybe as the weather gets cooler people are going to spend more time indoors browsing ads and they will riding so there’s that.
I have one, (maybe two) bikes I’d like to post, and my GF has been trying to sell an older (2005) Sprinter Van for about a month now and priced fairly. I think we were a little late to the seller market party… I’ve been dragging my feet about posting the bike for this very reason.
I’ve had mixed results but I guess that is typical. Sold my track bike, went quick and no fuss, tried selling some parts and what could be termed a project bike (just needed a partial groupset) and got ghosted several times by buyers. I typically price things to move so I don’t think that I was out of line for the market.
I’m surprised the track bike went so quickly, but that’s cool!
After Christmas there is another seller market sweet spot since folks typically have a little extra time and money. Hang in there.
Thanks mate, your reply and the others are reassuring
There’s a reasonably strong SS/Fixed gear community here. I’ve sold two now, one was going to be used a velodrome (despite the closest being 3.5hrs away) but the other, which was run on the road, was revamped into a flat bar commuter, shame really.
I would pop so much stuff off on ebay (tons of bikes over the years) and now I wont even entertain selling on ebay anymore since I will need to show proof of purchase to avoid income taxes. I guess im just going to sit on bikes moving forward and not buy anything new haha.
For the record, I dont have social media so things like marketplace are not my thing, I guess I could try craigslist again.
Anyone else get the mass market advertisement from Specialized? They produced too many bikes (mostly entry models) are are now offering massive discounts. Economy and demand have turned. Local bike shops have merch sitting on shelves too. Hang in there!
Yup, here is the October flash sale at Specialized ProductListing | Specialized.com
Local bike shops appear to have normal looking inventory levels of bikes in stores.
@wasket last week I sold some GP5000 tires to a guy that works at LBS. Sold two power meters back in April, those went fast and everything else sat for a long time.
I havnt sold anything large recently but have bought. Prices seem to be coming down due to a bunch of factors already mentioned. People seem to still be of the mindset that you can put your kids through college if you have an extra shimano chain laying around. Stock is back, demand is down. Best advice I can give to move stuff is price it competitively and dont think youre gonna get what you coulda gotten for it last year.
Kinda funny…was looking for some tubular wheels for cross. Found some at a reasonable price but still cheaper elsewhere. Asked if the seller would knock $50 off, and was told to pound sand. He sent me a message like 5 weeks later asking if I was still interested. Truthfully, the $50 didnt really make or break the deal, probably woulda just bought them, but the seller was a jerk so I bought them cheaper elsewhere
Ebay provides access to a market that will probably pay far more for your item than a local seller. It more than makes up for their cut. They also provide buyer and seller protection.
They do provide protection but 99% of the time, it’s to the buyer, but done so with minimal to no investigation. I quit using eBay for anything large after getting repeatedly scammed. I sold a set of wheels on there a few years ago. Buyer claims they were damaged in transit. No problem, I shipped insured, told him to send em back and I’d take care of it. Instead filed a complaint that I sold items not as described and got a full refund with no obligation to return the items. Fast forward a few months, he has a picture of him at an event on Facebook or Strava, with my wheels on his bike. Case was closed, I bought him a set of zipps
I’m hopeful this is the exception and not the norm, but it was enough to push me to other sales platforms.
