Top Tube Bags for Gravel Bike

Second this, i’m using the regular mag tank on my Cuthroat to ride gravel and I’ve never had anything fall out. It holds enough snacks for long rides and is easy accessible when riding. I have a mix of Revelate and Salsa bags for bikepacking and really like them all.

Not a top tube bag, but it fills the same role for me–and it’s a solid compromise to having a full-length 1/2 frame bag: https://www.ebay.com/itm/SHIMANO-PRO-Discover-Frame-Bag-Small-Waterproof-2-7L-/324035918651

I ended up picking up the Bontrager top tube bag for my Checkpoint. It’s big enough that I was able to tuck my Silca Pocket Impero into it and still have plenty of room for gels and chews above it. It mounted nice and clean and feels pretty sturdy.

I have been having a tough time finding a bag where the front strap fits under the stem if you don’t have spacers. I now use the bag above which has worked really well for me.

(They ship to the US - just email?

What’s the distance from the forward-most bolt to the steerer tube? Trying to determine if this would work for my Diverge…

Not the cheapest, but I got one from Rapha. It’s pretty similar to the Apidura 1l. I wanted something waterproof for bikepacking (had my phone + powerbank in there). It needed to be narrow enough and I liked the straps. It performed really well.

Have a look at Dark Speed Works bags too.

I measured as best I could with the bag on and it looks to be about 6.5 cm from the bolt to the steerer tube on my 56cm Checkpoint.

Did you buy the Bontrager bag recently? I haven’t been able to find it in stock anywhere.

Yes. I was initially told that it would be July when I spoke to them at the Trek Store here in Columbus. However when I brought the bike in to get the Enve gravel bars installed, it had the bag on it when I picked it up, so I guess they found one for me which was pretty cool.

I don’t have a top tube bag from them but have a couple of other bags from Ojeva Negra and have thought about buying their Snack Pack. The stuff I have is really well built and wasn’t heinously expensive. They are a pretty small operation and are sometime out of things for a while but were really helpful when I gave them a call.

Worth thinking about exactly what you want the bag to carry. I’ve got one of the Revelate mag bags (no issues with it popping loose) and it is good for snacks but doesn’t really fit a cell phone and snacks or snacks and tools. My buddy has their Chuckbucket and it is pretty awesome for touring/rambling around the mountains but not so much for race day.

A half frame bag might be worth a look if you want to be able to carry more stuff and are less worried about easy access while riding.

If only I could thumbs down posts. If I hadn’t done the screenshot you’d have ruined my Dad joke…

I’ve got the Apidura one, which is the same size. I greatly prefer this to an above TT bag.

  1. it’s bigger (2.5L v 1L)
  2. It doesn’t hit my knees or crotch at lights

The only problem here is… you need side-exit bottle cages. I’ve got a 58 frame, low bottle mounts, and you still need to use the rear bottle. I’ve been using Elite cannibal xc cages, which are good and cheap.

@Kuttermax - Hows the side support on that Bontrager bag?

On the topic, has anyone found good quick release bolts here?
I’ve tried Trek Quick Release bottle cage bolts, they work well inside the bags ,but not every bag fill allow the studs inside the holes. If you mount them with the latch on the outside, your leg catches the gap between the bag and frame.
I’m trying thumb bolts now https://amzn.to/2TZjebO these take up a lot of space.

It’s good. I’ve done a 50 mile and a 65 mile so far with it and it’s been perfectly stable, easy to access, etc. It’s much more stable than the small bag with straps that I’ve used on my road bike and XC mountain bike at times. The bolt on connection likely helps a lot though too.

For comparison sake, the is the bag with straps that I used on my other bikes. It’s a little smaller than the Bontrager bag.

I can recommend this one from Topeak. Doesn’t hit my knees unless i’m out of the saddle, lots of room, fits securely, has a neat built-in waterproof cover.

Anyone have experience with the Topeak Fast Fuel bag?

Broadfork Bags will custom make your bag to your frame. They are pretty exact. Mom and Pop… may take a minute. But mine are holding great two years later.

I’ve got the Topeak Toploader, which looks pretty similar. It is very well made, high quality, stable, doesn’t shift or bounce.
It does end up rubbing my knees, however, so I don’t end up using it very often. This bag looks a bit smaller so maybe it wont be an issue.

Saw this on someone’s bike at a local group ride and liked it, so bought one myself. I’ve had it on a couple weeks and I like it for a minimalist low profile bento box. It’s pretty bare minimum and just barely fits my phone at an angle, but plenty of room for misc snacks, car keys, CO2 and inflater. I removed the stupid Cervelo patch on the top.

I prefer a flip-top bag for racing/fast rides, where the bag only contains nutrition. The Revelate MagTank or similar works pretty well.

The downside of that design is lack of security. I’ve had car keys bounce out while the top is open and I hit a pothole. So, I also have a zip-top bag that I use bike-packing, where I want to use it for stashing phone/wallet/keys, and I don’t mind a bit more effort to access the contents.
