I have the same set up. I do bluetooth to an iPad running TR and have my CABLE talking to the Apple TV.
Thanks @jgthomas59. I was thinking for doing it the other way around, but I suppose the control side should use the most direct method.
Yeah, I figure direct Bluetooth is more reliable. I get brief drop outs on the Zwift side from time to time with the CABLE. But it’s just a display so doesn’t need to be perfect.
Delete.
I have the Apple TV running the Zwift app, TR on the iPad synced with the PM, trainer, HRM and CABLE syncing everything to Zwift.
Same set up here as well. Works great. I connect everything via bluetooth to TR on the iPad, then send the CABLE data over to Zwift on my Apple TV.
Agree with others, use the most reliable connection to connect to your TR workout as you don’t want issues there. Could care less if the CABLE gives me an occasional drop out on Zwift.
Thanks for all the replies. Out of interest do you connect directly to Zwift when you only use that or just leave it as it is.
My CABLE is set up to only read power from the trainer but not control it. So if I’m riding on ZWIFT by itself, I’ll connect directly to ZWIFT via bluetooth to the Apple TV, or through the companion app on my iPhone.
I have ordered my CABLE. I look forward to trying it out
Chuffed that both trainerroad and the zwift companion work splitscreen on my Google Pixel
Sneaked up Ventoux whilst doing Mary Austin -1 last night.
I do it the lame way… I mark my TR workout as an outside workout, write down the TR workout steps on a piece of paper (3’@140w - 4’@180w - 3’@260w - and so on), and do my ride in Zwift. I get the same workout, same IF & TSS. For me it’s easier than setting up multiple screens and running both platforms simultaneously.
A few times in the past I’ve created the TR workout using ZwiftFactory, saved the “custom” workout to Zwift, and used ERG mode in Zwift to complete the TR workout, but I no longer do that. I’ve found that while I love ERG mode to do my workouts in TR I don’t so much like it in Zwift.
The CABLE is finicky. It can be trial and error to get the ANT+ to BT conversion set up how you want it, and every now and then it doesn’t want to fire up. But overall I’ve done at least a couple hundred sessions with it, and would be lost without it Good luck!
The only time I find the CABLE to have issues is when there’s an update pending. When the CABLE starts acting weird, the first thing I do now is check for an update. After the update, it works fine again.
Experimented yesterday. My original hammer was fine controlled by ant+ on my phone by TrainerRoad, broadcasting to Zwift, until I calibrated (in TrainerRoad). Was then stuck at 100watts until I unplugged the hammer and plugged it back in again, and was fine for the rest of the workout.
Pre-lockdown, I had a dedicated turbo bike, which I swapped off once I started zwifting for my winter bike (7 speed v 11 speed). But also looking to upgrade my Topstone Tiagra to a GRX chainset so I can move the 4iii 105 power meter to that!
Resurrecting an older thread here…
Is it possible to set up your TR workout as an outdoor ride and pushed to your garmin/wahoo/etc and let said head unit control your trainer, while zwifting (not letting Zwift control the trainer)?
Yes, that can work. Same rule of dual apps/devices applies, where you need to make sure to de-select smart trainer from the “Control” box in the Zwift Devices screen. It must only see the trainer for power info, and not control. Done that way, the bike head unit is free to run the workout for the trainer in ERG mode.
Haven’t justified the GRX “just” to have power (when I probably won’t do workouts on it), but in the prep for the winter bike being used for, eh, winter, I have been running zwift off the Hammer power by bluetooth, and TR by Ant+ pretty successfully the last few weeks.
Spin downs still an issue, and require a power off, but I’ve been doing them once a week after a recess/ endurance ride. Only other issue was this week when I did the sprints in Whorl and I had to restart the hammer as it “stuck” at the initial sprint power.
