Unbound Gravel 2023

I bet there might be some vomiting for some people overdoing it on donuts

Can you finish with a negative time? Asking for a friend…

They say it’s possible!

Donut Champion – The lowest donut adjusted finishing time wins this division. We take your finishing time and subtract 5 minutes for every donut you ate during the race. The winner will have the lowest adjusted time. If your fast enough and can eat enough you could end up with a negative time. Male and Female Donut Champions in the 22, 41, and 61 mile races are awarded our Yellow Jersey, a custom first place medal, and an awesome trophy.

They run one of these out of Trexlertown, PA every year. I’m not sure if he’s still doing it, but a competitive eater was competing every year and just destroying the field - pretty sure he ran a negative time

ETA results from the last two years

Anybody know what size tires Keegan ran? I guess when you’re Keegan you can win on ā€œslowā€ ramblers. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Can’t wait for next year when all us amateurs roll up to the start with ramblers :grinning:

This sounds amazing! Especially if they’re warm donuts, mmmm mmmm mmmmmm.

On Bonk Bros Dylan said he thought Keegan was running a prototype, maybe a new rambler? He did say Keegan’s new bike has clearance for +50 so maybe just the extra clearance was they key.

Interesting. I had wondered if Maxxis was ever going to get around to updating the Rambler as so many people have moved to faster tires.

My lauf came with ramblers but it was the 120tpi version so I was a bit wary of running those at unbound. I ran pirelli Cinturato M’s. I wondered if the knobs collected more mud than a less knobby tire.

Hey good on ya for piece of mind part change and for not quiting becuase it was hard due to conditions. We all have our limits but if we pull the plug and we could have contnued barring injury, safety or mechanical then might be a little embarrassed and look for a partner to confirm our decison…so that we feel good about it…but when we look in the mirror we know the truth…
so good on ya and congrats safe the t-shirt Unbound 2023 is one for the books.

Yeah this one is going to sting for a while. I’ll likely never stop second guessing what I could have done, but fact is that it’s in the past. Nothing left but to learn from the mistakes and endeavor to make new mistakes that don’t lead to a DNF next time.

Yes. One of the winning distances had a time of 5 minutes on 18 donuts. Two more donuts and he would have been negative.

That’s a real hero.

So when do we start the Unbound 2024 thread? I’m already itching for next year after I deferred this year.

Start it. When’s the lottery open?

I think I started this one right before the lottery season but at this rate it’s Unbound season all year round

Well, ole Nathan Hass should follow this thread as there certainly has been a lot of discussion on the all the issues he brings up

Not sure if this video has been posted yet. GCN guy’s day, pretty well put together (not your typical guy w/ a go pro). Looks like he was having a bit of fun in the mud and rain, but the heat absolutely wrecked him.
Without those rain storms cooling things off in the afternoon, I’d bet there would have been at least 2x the DNF’s in the 200.

So honest question - more excited or less excited for Unbound 2024 now after you read about everything that happened in 2023?

It’s a great video and I shared it with a few people as it really highlights some of the different sections pretty well and better than most of the other YT vids.

The first time I watched it as he started fading I was thinking they were maybe just making the video a little more dramatic… then I kept watching and it was ā€œOMG…he’s in major trouble!ā€ā€¦

I wonder how much water he took with him at Aid 1? My wife actually saw him come through Aid 1 as she was the first car in the pit area and he pitted basically right on the road where the riders go through. One other guy came over from the other side and helped his dad during the first pit.

I’d say my thoughts within the few days following the race were pretty negative and I was almost set on not using my deferred registration. The cost of the whole trip and the responses by race organizers (or whatever their actual position is) were a big turn off.
The more I have thought about it though, the whole experience still draws me in. The challenge of whatever the ride can bring, the large expo/gathering of people, and as much as I don’t want to admit, the bucket list/marquee event makes me want to be there. I live in a small town in Wyoming, so there aren’t many opportunities for events similar to this in size/experience much closer or cheaper than what Unbound brings.
