As long as our users understand, I think we can do a tiered release. Brandon is going to have a good solid 4 months to work on this (at least) so we can do the MDP (minimal delightful product) then start adding stuff on and improving based on feedback.
I would want it to be comparable to training peaks. With min of checking off workout and a Rtss. Then I can check everything else out on strava
That indeed made my day too.
I think you guys are on the right track to knock off several competitors at the same time.
Swim and Run workouts should be
- Able to take structured workouts outside with more devices(garmin to the least).
- Have some reliable and comparable way to estimate training load and or TSS.
- You basically will need to start looking at some āfeedbackā physiological data to estimate where athlete training is - like what peakers (pkrs.ai) and tridot try to do. I still think your triathlon programs are not well balanced for everyone which is OK for static plans but it will be great to take this further with some ML algorithms and evaluate how different bodies absorb strain
Heck, if you want, have it in the Beta only version and those of us that understand this is going through development can go that way. (I only use the desktop version for workouts anyway).
Nate, your transparency on this is wonderful (and very brave). Even just bringing in basic information and marking workouts completed will be huge for those of us clamoring for it.
thanks guys thatās great news!!!
from my understanding TSS (or rTSS) is at the basic of your approach to planning training, right? therefore i think TSS for running should be there before deep analysis and even swim support.
so i would say MDP should have:
- upload from garmin with distance, time, pace
- match with existing planned activity (like for rides)
- include some sort of TSS
then you can add analysis (like for rides) and then swim
this would avoid the basic manual adjustments we do trying to report progress on our TRI plans
thanks, and keep up the good work!
great news! I stopped using the TR Calendar because it wasnāt correctly showing my TSS for the week when I ran.
For me the minimum Iād want is for a swim/run to automatically appear in the TR Calendar but also reflect in my TSS for the day/week.
Just thinking outside the norm, this extension takes run and swim TSS, could you ābuyā the code from the author or hire them for a contract??
As many have stated also a big +1 for me. It would be a big dealbreaker for me to actually switch to TR if this feature is imlemented. As a (cross) triathlete who loves to do all sports (MTB, Cycling, Swim, Run) we are always looking for software who could combine our workouts without additional manual editing.
Must Have:
- Standard information about the completed run:
Title - Distance - TSS
Description
Planned workout vs Completed
HRdata
Average Pace and Speed
TSS score (rTSS not needed per se)
GPS info (Elevationnumbers and profile), Map of route,
Notes
Same goes for swimming, but then the relevant swimming data.
Good luck Team TR.
Swimming needs more editability than cycling or running. Iāve tried 3 different makes & they all mess up, usually related to changing swim stroke etc. That on itās own could make it more complicated.
HR during swims on different devices is becoming more common. With a bike youād generally get everything in 1 field, but you might want to merge swim files. More complication.
+1!!!
Please implement this feature. I use TR as my basis for all the training I am doing from beginner to half distance at the end of the year. Following your excellent programs, I have seen some excellent improvements. However, it would be amazing to be able to import run/swim data to TR, just like outdoor cycling, to get a proper accurate representation of TSS.
BTW - love the outdoor rides being pushed to Garmin. Is it only me who has to do it manually tho?
It should be automatic. Drop a line to support@trainerroad.com and weāll help you out.
Wait, Nate, are you saying there is now Trainerroad support for importing running and swimming workouts onto the calendar?
- No.
Follow the progress: (bold for emphasis by me)
- Nate means the transfer of the outdoor cycling workout to the Garmin should be automatic.
The Run/Swim stuff is still way out, but more stated in public for planning per Nateās prior posts.
Thanks!
Thank you for listening and being responsive. The willingness to change (instead of defending your previous conclusions) is a key trait of an effective leader.
Most of my pain would go away with just this:
- Automatically check off a planned workout (or add to calendar if no planned workout).
- Change the planned time and distance to the actual time and distance.
- Storing ALL the data you get for the imported runs, even if you currently do nothing with it, so that later when new features are added those are usable on previous runs as well.
The more data you can display for this workout, the better. Iām sure laps, HR data, a map image, photos, and other stuff is being brought in during the importā¦ and the more of that I can see, the better. But even TSS is not ānecessaryā in the first step: I can estimate it the same way Iāve done now. If a run gets imported that doesnāt match a plan workout, leave it without TSS; if there was a planned workout, keep the pre-estimated TSS until/unless I adjust it.
As a minor note: if a map image comes along with the import, or can be easily generated in-house from the GPS track, adding that map image to the calendar thumbnail is a nice, pretty detail that clearly identifies the run on the calendar and looks professional. That seems like low-hanging fruit youād want to pick, but is certainly not necessary for a minimum viable product.
In the longer term, of course I want to see all kinds of analysis. I especially value just a few things:
- Automatic calculation of TSS.
- The same kind of āpersonal recordsā you have for cycling, with seasons and everything, so I can see my progress over time and my best results.
Iāll note that I started using TR just 4 months after I started cycling, and TR (via the tool and the various videos/podcasts) has taught me a great deal about how to train. Over time, yāall need to bring that level of comprehensive coverage to running and swimming as wellā¦ but obviously that will take significant time. All we expect from TR is constant improvement, not lightning-fast change.
This is great news. I just started back to some running during these Covid-times so I can get out and wanted to follow a basic plan. Iāve been on TR for several years now and on TrainingPeaks for almost a decade. With all the improvements on Plan Builder, I let my TP subscription lapse, but starting with running again I was surprised that there wasnāt much depth to the running support.
That being said, I think the main items for me to see in TR for running would be:
- Have run workouts upload / sync to a TR-planned run workout
- Upload the basic metrics from the device / app
- Have runs incorporated into general stress / fitness trend data
- Eventually have some running training plans available, and integrate run events into Plan Builder.
I am sure these are many of the things already asked by others, but I really see TR positioned to become a central training repository and one-stop solution for endurance athletes.
Keep up the great work
The same as an outdoor bike ride without power meter would be a good start. Something to calculate fitness correctly
- Total Distance (map is probably not important)
- HR
- Average pace
- mile splits or watch splits (Most of my runs are set to manual splits instead of the standard mile splits)
For a first go round that would probably be enough.
I think (or at least i hope) most users asking for this are smart enough to know TR is a bike training app first. Everything else is cherry on the top addition.
Looking fwd to this. Will drop a few subscriptions as soon as we get the runs in here!
Everybody knows that TR started as a bike training app first, yes. But theyāve communicated clearly that they are on a multisport path.
Seeing everything else as āa cherry on topā is perfectly valid, and Iām glad youāre happy. But for many others, itās very important to see increasing multisport capability over time. Perhaps those people donāt want multiple subscriptions, or cannot afford them, or simply prefer TRās approach: but for whatever reason, seeing TR work on these things is a very high priority for some users, myself included.
I mean. They donāt have to do it. If you are here is not because their running or swimming. They are a bike training app that is adding features. Is it nice they are adding stuff, like running and swimming? Absolutely. Very important? I respectfully disagree.
I get that is high priority for you and some other users, but i can almost guarantee that a huge percent of users didnāt start paying expecting runs to be added.
As i said before, cherry on the top. (And i also want to stop paying multiple services)
Hi team,
Adding multi-sport keeps trainerroad relevant not only for people actively competing in multiple sports, but for rest, recovery from injury and cross training.
I would like to use the trainer road plans in my run intervals on Stryd. Even if you are not into multi-sports, many bike riders cross train and want to log TSS and other metrics for nutrition and recovery.
My wish list would be:
- Ability to do RUN the trainerroad workouts indoor and out with my Stryd powermeter
- Have the RUNās linked to a relevant trainer-road workout when in the Tri Plans and have this reflected/added to the calendar. For example, the plan might say to do 30 minutes of Darwin (threshold) or one and a half hours of Petit (Endurance/recovery) on a treadmill or outside.
- Allow the prescribed runs to be exported outside to a watch as an actual RUN and recorded as such. Currently I can do them inside, on a treadmill with my stryd with the trainerroad app, and it gets logged as a bike ride.
Sorry to ask for such a lot in one postā¦
