Using TrainerRoad with Kickr Core + Zwift Click

I’m thinking of buying the Kickr Core with the Zwift Click + Cog. It provides virtual gear change, but not for TrainerRoad.

I have two questions:

  • Does anyone know if you’re able to turn off the virtual gear function and change gears manually when using TrainerRoad?
  • If not, are there a lot of workouts on TrainerRoad that require changing gears? It sounds like most of the workouts are in ERG mode where you do not, but I want to make sure I’m not missing out on a core piece of TrainerRoad if I get the Zwift Click + Cog (e.g. FTP Testing Intervals).

Thank you for the help!

Hi!

Actually, the Zwift Click just works with Zwift. If you are mostly using ERG, you don’t have an issue.

But, if you think you will need shifting at some point, I’ll suggest you to install a cassette. You can use the virtual shifting and have the real shifting possibility when you need it.

Look up the QZ app. It’s a phone app that can pair with your trainer and the Zwift click/play and then you pair that app as your trainer on zwift/trainerroad/mywhoosh (it poses as the trainer on bluetooth). It implements its own form of virtual gearing and you can use the Zwift click to shift up and down. (If you are on iOS, you need to email the developer for beta access).

Of course you could also just buy any bluetooth media remote, tape it to your handlebar, and map the buttons to the keyboard shortcuts that control upping and lowering resistance in TrainerRoad when in resistance mode. It’s basically the same thing. The only thing you gain with the zwift click and zwift is that because the trainer firmware implements the resistance shift for different gears it’s just a tad bit more responsive. Not enough to matter in an interval workout in my opinion though.
