It’s a lot of climbing, we will find out!
awesome report - my club just put on DRVG in Rochester and I can say weather can really cause some of those obstacles that aren’t foreseeable till the day of. In our race the team cleared the entire course at 8:30pm the night before…we had folks inspect the morning of. We had one tree down on the road and had to chainsaw it…race started without a hitch then someone called in…WE MISSED A SECOND TREE DOWN. Luckily riders got through it and we cleared it out for the community.
It seems like the west and southwest has a bunch of ~12 hour MTB races with team relay options that look like fun.
Does anyone know of any of these sorts of events in the upper midwest? (I am in MN.) Google search turns up one that happened in Cloquet, MN in July, but figured I would ask the TR hive mind.
Traveling up to Fond du Lac WI from southern Illinois this month for the Ganther Race The Lake. Hard to find road races these days so I’m willing to travel. Never done this one before.
This is already a big race for our group from N. IL…but I have always had a work conflict. COVID allowed me to finally do it last year.
Pretty damn flat except for one, short steep climb in the state park on the other side of the lake…I wanna say it is ~mile 65? Could be wrong on that.
The key is to watch for crosswinds…they can rip the fields apart early depending on direction, or on the roads coming in after the climb.
Pretty well organized event and definitely worth doing. What wave are you signing up for?
I really want to do this … just learned about it this year. I’m putting it on my list for next year. A proper road race is hard to find for sure.
The 22mph group. I think it might be wave 5?
When you are stalking/following the dot plot of @Cory.Rood at Tour of Central Iowa and this post pops up!?!
I’m flying back to MN to do Gray Duck Grit in October. the 222 mile edition
The course isn’t released, but this is my best guess as to what the route will look like.
It’s so close to my home town (Zumbrota) that I feel compelled to do it. Will be my first ever double and my first overnight race. It will suck while doing it, but the memories will be glorious.
It was nuts, it was happening right as I came into town. Police ID’d a ‘Person of Interest’ In a murder investigation and the suspect barricaded himself in a local church!
Well done on the podium! Not an easy area to put 380 miles under the tires.
I competed in the Little Apple Gravel race this weekend - I just wanted to give these guys a shout out, its a small race with great atmosphere and promoters that are really trying. Its just outside of Chicago (about an hour) in Manhattan Illinois and the gravel is very deep and loose in some sections and the course is flat.
The race made for a fast day and the gravel condition and wind eliminates the fact it really doesn’t have any hills.
Highly recommend this race, just be careful on the gravel section corners as they really are super loose.
There was supposed to be a GFNY event in Rockford, IL on August 7th … anyone know if it actually happened? Did anyone ride in it?
If i remember correctly, a riding buddy was signed up for it, but it got canceled.
The North Shore Century is annual favorite of our little squad - September 18th. They do a great job of organizing and the stops are well stocked.
Race The Lake was a blast. Definitely want to do that one again. Very well organized and supported
Holy crap … I just looked at the results. Looks like 50+ people came in within 10 seconds of one another in wave 1 – that seems crazy for a 90 mile race. Was it chaotic?
Man I was far away from any of that, back in wave 5. It was a hard pace, but very well ordered. Our wave held together until High Cliff then it was scattered for the rest of the race
Pretty common for that race….course isn’t hard enough to break up the type of riders in Wave 1 so it comes down to a pretty big field. The two turns before the finish line help spread it out a bit, though.
Is anyone else racing Broke Pedal 50 (Wabasha, MN) or the Filthy 50 (Lanesboro, MN)?
If you’ve raced Filthy 50 in the past, would 700x40 slicks work?
