Hi! I am late to the thread, but saw this and wanted to ask whether you have any resources for meditation that you would recommend for those of us just starting out. 40+ years is an amazing amount of experience.
Thanks, Beth
Hi Beth, honestly it’s been too long since starting out and I don’t have any info or resources.
@WindWarrior, ok, thanks anyway!
Headspace app is a good place to start. Also, I used to work with a sports phycologist (different sport). Since then I know there have been a couple of podcasts more specific to that- if you’re interested.
I use the calm app, they did a lifetime subscription sale the beginning of the year. It was around $100, thought it was a great deal. I’ve been using the app for over a year and love all the content they have!
I honestly can’t remember the price per month they charge, maybe $5.
Eckhart Tolle has some good books on meditation and one percent happier a book by Dan Harris I also enjoyed. Hope it helps!
Maybe you’ve seen these already, but here are a couple of existing topics with suggestions:
I don‘t have 40 years of practice under my belt (feeling young right now), but have meditated for most of my adult life, so about a decade.
To start out I can really recommend the medito app. It‘s all free, not attached to any one religion/practice and very kept simple. Has also great ressources for starting out!
It‘s not as gamified as some others, but from my point of view, thats a plus
Seeing that comment makes me feel old right now
Looked up meditation and landed on Mayo Clinic because I generally like their articles. Here is the one on meditation:
Apparently I’m into Mindfulness Meditation. Now I know. One advantage of mindfulness is there are no apps, no special poses or movements, no special imagery or words. You can do it anywhere and nobody is the wiser.
All that said, I am enjoying 5 minutes of breathing using the Mindfulness app on my Apple Watch.
Highly recommend the HeadSpace app. I’ve been using it for 3 years.
hey, I discovered a new recovery aid. Tonight after the Wed group ride one of the dudes handed out samples of his new product called Pila Kava. Now if you’ve tried Kava before, it tastes like dishwater and dirt kinda nasty. I tried it in Fiji and it had no effect on me.
Tonight was different, had the Hawaiian Tea Kava and it tasted great, like a mix of guava and passion fruit. His family is from Tonga and thats where he sources the kava.
This was my 4th day of riding, and was feeling tired after the ride. But after one of these I immediately felt relaxed and alert. Better than going home a cracking open a beer. Hours later and I’m mellow and happy.
Can’t say enough good things about this guy, he is always happy
and on rides he pulls us around like Tim the tractor. Feels like he has nailed the post-ride relaxer that mellows the body while keeping your mind alert. I’m buying some.
What helps me is getting the muscles massaged very lightly by my GF. It relaxes me a lot which is probably the main effect (not sure the massage itself has an effect on the muscles).
Pro tip: Give massage back to secure future massages.
