Not sure what being geriatric has to do with tyre size. Most of the riders at the Tour were apparently on 28mm this year :man_shrugging:

My aero set is 25/25 with latex tubes, to shave off a handful or two of seconds on longer TT efforts.

23s front and rear. 23s look cleaner on my rims than 25s with no perceived loss of comfort. I’m not sure my frame will accept 28s.

I have two bikes, One with 28s and the other with 32s. Once I started using the new bike with 32s I just have no desire to go back.

My good bike has 25mm’s front and rear, but that because its rim brakes or I would go wider. I’ve hand 28mm’s in the last frame but I needed to deflate them slightly to in and out of the callipers.
The commuter has got a 25mm rear and 23mm front. I’ve had a 28mm in the rear with full guards but on the front the bike shop misplaced the Kinesis forks and upgraded me to the lighter fork on the dearer model but it can only take 23mm tyres with the full guard (25mm without guards).

I’m pretty happy on 25s, but would gladly run 28s if I was sure my bike could handle it. I have a set of 32 GP5000s that I’ll throw on my gravel bike from time to time. I like that a lot, but I’m not sure how much of that is the tire vs how much I just really like riding that bike.

28mm f/r, GP5000 clinchers. I’m actually surprised they fit in my ‘11 Allez.

Tandem bike is 32mm f/r, gatorskins, but I have to deflate the front to fit it through the caliper.

I’m building up a new bike with some Hollowgram wheels - 32mm wide, 21mm inner width.

My first thought was the new GP5000 all season tubeless but they don’t come in 30mm. Only 28mm or 32mm.

My second choice, maybe first now, is the Pirelli P Zero Race TLR. I can get those in 30mm. They are almost as fast as the Contis with better flat resistance and more tread.

I’ve never ridden more than 25mm (max for my bike). Is 30mm a baby step and I should go straight to 32mm? I do think that 28-30mm would be aero optimized on this wheelset.

25mm (f/r) Veloflex (superb tire) on Progress Phantom.

I’m running 28s on the carbon ‘fast’ wheels, but only because they came with the tyres. Likely will go 30 or 32 when it comes time to swap.

On the ‘endurance’ alloy wheels, technically 32s but measuring 34.7 on those rims. Weirdly I seem to go faster on these wheels (and have crashed them twice requiring bending the bead back into place once, both of which would have written off the carbon wheels)

It depends on the tire. but with a 21 mm internal width I think 28 mm wide rubber would best allow you to follow the “rule of 105.” Now that being said, the wattage loss of going with 32 mm rubber probably isn’t huge and unless you are a TT’er trying to find every last watt, it might not be a huge deal.

For what it’s worth, the widest tires I had ridden on my road bikes was 25mm then 4 years ago I got a gravel bike as my N-1 bike and used 32 mm wide GP5000 (on a 25 internal 32 external rim…tire measured out about 33 mm when inflated). That tire width is very comfortable, I was getting WAY less flats per mile than I ever had before (still on tubes), felt a little more confident descending, and I was able to ride more light gravel and dirt.

But, and this may be entirely in my head, I do feel like the 32 mm didn’t feel as fast or snappy or agile as the 25’s felt. I’m going to be building up a dedicated road bike this winter and I think I’ll go with 28 front and back. Or maybe a ~25mm up front depending on the wheelset and I feel the urge to obey the rules of aero not to leave any watts hanging

Thanks. I’m leaning towards splitting the difference with 30mm tires. Maybe try those Pirelli tires even though I’ve been a Conti Grand Prix rider for decades. I guess I could just go with the regular GP 5000 S TR in 30mm.

26mm/26mm on Tarmac SL2 - My Ksyrium ES wheels have such narrow rims that when the brakes are set up for the rim, even the 26mm tire is tough to fit through. I think the frame could take 28’s if I had wider rims to allow the brakes to be set wider. Maybe one day I’ll find a nice used set of wheels that’ll let me step up to 28s.

I just returned some 40mm tires and ordered 35’s for my gravel bike for road use on DT Swiss R470db rims.

I would not buy any frame that cannot easily fit 32’s these days.
