Where did you ride OUTSIDE today? (2019 & 2020)

Late to post, but Saturday was an enjoyable 54 miles with 6k’ feet of climbing in 5hrs with perhaps 15% on pavement. Ventured into new territory with new sights on a gloriously sunny day that was neither too cool nor too warm.

This is perhaps 2 miles from the end of pretty much 10 straight miles of climbing, going from <1500’ to 3900’. I’ve never seen anyone going up this section but plenty of riders coming down as it has some great twists and turns, roots and rocks, and overall flow to it.

This is actually shortly before the previous pic with double-digit climbs before and after this. It’s a welcome pause. About 100m from here, at the edge of the forest the previous pic is in, I’ve been stopped by a cow crossing as they move from one pasture to another.

Be kind to nature and don’t trample. Hedgehogs, “Igels” in German, are some kind of national treasure here in Switzerland. In addition to signs warning cars to slow for children, you’ll see signs warning to slow for hedgehogs.

Overlooking Hochmoor Rothenthurm (Rothenthurm moors, ok, High Moors of Rothenthurm). Einsiedeln is just on the other side of the opposite range.

Wood sculptures on the trail, see right side of pic, is a not uncommon here. At this point, I’ve ridden 30mi, will drop down and cruise on the left side of the lake ahead, Ägerisee, to start heading home. Next weekend, probably, I plan to hang a left and continue onward before swinging toward home.

Lower down the mountain and the obligatory pic of cows with cowbells.

The next day, Mother’s Day, was a short spin before the wife and kids got up. Unlike the beautiful Saturday, Sunday started out wet and gray. Though it did clear up in the afternoon for a clear, windy, and chilly day.

Did another quickie easy spin (16mi, 1.5’k, 75min) starting “late” at 6a and I caught a glimpse of the dog (fat-tire) sled team that practices in a nearby forest. They were well ahead as I crested one small climb, I pulled out the GoPro and picked up the pace. They had just turned onto my trail, which banked up and then to the left out of sight. They had the option of right or left, I figure I would have seen them to the right, though that was a down slope, so I went left. There, it soon had three options, hard right, straight-right and left-straight, with the latter two heading to where I know their car is parked with the trailer. I chose left-straight thinking I’d catch them either way. Nope. So I tried to head them off where I figured they might have went. Ultimately no-joy and I continued on my journey. Hopefully, I’ll share a pic of the sled team someday. The only other time I spotted them was when my dog and I were running, it would early winter, I had a necessary headlight as it was early and still pitch dark, and they had clearly just finished. But, I’ve seen the trailer several times.

1.5hr Z2 + urban gravel!

The lockdown et al has effectively cancelled ‘Bike to Work Week’ here, so the local cycling coalition has started putting out “Neighbourhood Ride” maps to get people to explore different neighbourhoods around town. I took it upon myself to do my own exploring today during my easy ride. Took the single speed out and went through some old posh neighbourhood but was very pleasantly surprised to find a lot of old laneways between houses which are basically now for non-car use. Some are 3-4 blocks long, some have solid 5% average grades (fun up and down!), and all are gravel and grassy. I’m sure the richies will be delighted with some two-wheeled yahoo ripping through their backyards!

It’s recovery/discovery week so that means more urban exploring!

Another 90min of Z2 bombing around on the single speed seeking out hidden gems w/in city limits. Urban gravel and city singletrack is where it’s at!

Went to Nockamixon to do a light MTB ride with some friends. Couldn’t put down power in a few gears due to the cassette being worn because I neglected my old chain and once I swapped on a new one it just skipped all over. Luckily my LBS had an Eagle GX cassette in stock

Glad they fixed you up quickly with a new cassette. I bent the front chain ring on my gravel bike two weeks ago. It was a subtle bend that caused the chain the drop on the highest and lowest gears. The shop said I must have hit something while I’m sure it was the sudden power I put out on the last short steep climb before the chain started dropping. :grinning:

3.5hrs of junk miles. Not frustrating at all.

Managed another Top 10 KOM cup!
If it wasn’t for all the local pros hanging around with nothing to do, I’d be a lot closer to some crowns!

edit: just checked after upload – new 2-3min TR PRs! Just have to work on my 1 and 4 min power and I’ll have a PR full house!

I didn’t ride outside today, but I did walk 5 miles with my wife (after Clark earlier)… and on that walk, we were passed by Bill Walton in a bright orange YMCA jersey.

Seeing a 7’0” tall dude on a road bike is something.

Today was mostly foggy, damp, chilly at 42 F for much of the ride, though it cleared and warmed a bit near the end. Overall, it made the middle part a bit miserable and I shortened the ride as a result (had planned on >65 miles). But, it was good to be out nonetheless. The poor weather for the first several hours meant I saw virtually no one on the trails.

Decided to scrap my indoor workout today in exchange for some outdoor miles as a mental health boost. Set some nice power PRs going after a 15 mile segment @240w and got a Strava top 10 which is always fun. Tacked on some junk miles after that but I had a lot of fun so I think it was worth it. Almost hit a deer toward the end but luckily I was in my cool down and braked with enough time to let it pass.

Got out to do Carpathian +3 outdoors, loved it. Important to be able to push and actually still steer!

First singletrack ride of the year. Hard, but Great weather and stunning views. 37 miles and 5-6k feet of climbing depending on what app you believe!

Did a 3hour loop to Stanwell Tops (the ride, @Nate_Pearson missed out on).
The weather was absolutely glorious!!

TR work definitely paid off, I can do these rides at a fairly decent pace, while hanging in lower power zones. 2 years ago before TR this would have been basically an all out effort, today it’s the textbook of a moderate ride.

I love it when recovery weeks and spectacular weather line up, I just love it.

I was doing a great job keeping my heart rate down until we got to the two-and-a-half-minute climb back up to my house and my Wahoo yelled about a live segment at the same time as a nice lady on a mountain bike started drilling it. I don’t have the self-discipline to ignore both of those things at the same time so I accidentally shaved 12 seconds off my PR. Possibly should turn off the segment thing on the Wahoo, that’s new.

Did some local MTB with my buddy Pat. Gnats were out in full force, but didn’t stop us from having fun. Sharpening my MTB skills with each ride, feeling more confident through tight single track. Even scored some Top 10s (4th, 7th, and 2x10th). Found a delicious matching beer for my bike!
