Typical UK mid-winter anticyclonic gloom today. Basically 40m visibility Did my usual Z2 loop which is mostly along the Leeds-Liverpool canal hence the flat bit , that is genuinely the only flat around here, the bit from 27km onwards is more typical. There’s still 400m of climbing in 34km.
I met some mates I hadn’t seen for a while. It was forecast some early morning fog lifting to clear skies. I’m in Scotland though so you’ve guessed it, the fog never lifted. We did go through one village where it was totally lifted to blue skies but as soon as we went back to town the fog came down again. At least the other bit of the forecast (light winds) was right and given the town has been in a blanket of fog all day its unlikely to freeze.
I wore a (light waterproof, mainly wind proof) jacket that I bought on Black Friday (Pearl Izumi barrier IIRC) for the first time on top of my soft shell and in 2deg C and damp fog it was ideal How well it performs when it is warmer is unknown though or the other extreme in heavy rain
The route was roughly Dunfermline to Crossford to Dollar to Kinross around Loch Leven and back to Dunfermline.
I had quite a good ride to the far side of Stirling despite my Garmin going whacky in the damp weather. After constantly jumping from one page to the next after about 10 miles it decided to do a factory reset when it got to the language page 30 or so miles later on the move I was having difficulty finding English so I just left it to the Cafe.
The real failure was to come 16miles after the cafe. There’s a fairly long hill where you turn right for a smaller steeper hill. I stood up there, ‘Crack!’ so I sat back down and rolled over it. There’s a long descent but something never felt right when I put force through the pedals on the small rise half way down it. So I got off and saw this
Started seeing some fitness gains on zone2 workouts starting about a month ago, and really noticed it 10 days ago after setting a 3-hour zone2 power PR.
This is a recovery week and sure enough the fitness bump is baking in:
Highest ever 90 minute power during a zone2 interval, and only 58 seconds of zone3 HR What’s surprising is that power is higher than nearly all the 5x15-min (5-min rbi) sweet spot intervals of Tallac +2 from 3 years ago. Zone2 power (relative to HR) is up 20W in a month, and 20-30W higher than all zone2 over the past year.
I managed to borrow a bike and went out for a wee pre rain spin.
It was the first time I had used SRAM and on first impressions it was very slick to change up (down the cassette) but although smooth it was a bit too slow and deliberate the other way. It might be faster when you have more dexterity. I was too warm in the body which was a good job on the feel like -2deg descent from Knockhill but my fingers were frozen by it.
Love Maui. It was our annual family pilgrimage / meetup when we lived in SoCal, though sometimes we’d mix it up with time in Kaui. The West Maui Loop, which you may be one of your upcoming “bigger rides”, is nice with varied terrain. I find getting out near dawn is best as it gets you ahead of most of the traffic. From my last ride (and visit… it’s a long haul to get there from Switzerland, plus covid) there in 2018.
On Strava, I titled this ride “West Maui Loop - more awesome than an awesome opossum”, a title that may have been influenced by a movie at the time
Great scenery.
On food, depending on where you’re staying and pricing, Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar is good (reservation required or expect a long wait, but though in these times…?). Hit up a Times market because they’ll have great poke, not to mention seasoned goodies to bbq up. Star Noodle in Lahania is good (it appears Star Noodle relocated from up the hill and took the spot of one of our former favorites on the coast). If you’re in Ka’anapali, there is (was?) a good, though small, farmer’s market in the parking lot of Farmer’s Market Maui (or look up Bad Ass Coffee of Maui) on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Enjoy!
Meanwhile, I’m out by Palm Springs in Southern California where a short, basically flat, 4.4mi run I perceived to be relatively easy was viewed by my Garmin as a VO2max effort Enjoy your far better scenery.
