Planned out this route just before or early in lockdown, and ended up riding it virtually on the trainer at the time - only now getting around to revisiting it.
I’m out of practice at riding in the cold, though. I neglected to switch to winter boots, and with temps barely above freezing I was regretting that pretty quickly.
Rolled through Avebury on the way out. Wasn’t actually misty as this suggests - that’s the camera steaming up from being in a jersey pocket, but I kinda like the effect it gives!
Thanks to the unplanned stop, several photo pauses, and just general slowness, darkness was falling, the moon rising, and the temperatures dropping as I came back over the downs, still an hour or so from home.
Took a good long bath to get the feeling back in my feet, and my thumbs were still a little numb by the end of the day (back to normal today, thankfully!).
That’s a beautiful area. I have amazing memories of taking my young daughter to see the white horses, Stonehenge, and Avebury. Would love to ride there.
Its a recovery week for me and I had Lazy Mountain-2 in my calendar today. I was going to do it on the commute but I am WfH instead so I went out for short flat ride at lunchtime. Annoyingly the only busy road on route had temporary traffic lights again (I think whilst they are building the new cycle path next to it and the associated housing they’ll be there week days for over a year), so it was a bit of a high cadence (wee ring) sprint when the lights turned green. The other annoying bit was the only hill on the route (a twisty one) and a car driver decided to wait patiently behind me but I ended up spinning a wee bit faster than I would have wanted. With those two events my HR ended up going above zone 1 and into zone 2 for 1.4% of my ride I had wanted to do it all in zone 1.
It was/is a beautiful day and although I wanted to stop south of Yaxley on the Holme Road for a pic, the biting north wind in the Fens convinced me not too. I never got the camera out until I was back in the warm with a cup of coffee
The second recovery ride of my recovery week and this time I thought I’d miss the temporary traffic lights on London Road and head, into Yaxley up to Farcet, into the Fens and into Stanground and Fletton before heading down the built London Road cycle path. Lol, I forgot the into Stanground and Fletton bit and ended up going back to Farcet and Yaxley which was nearly a mile longer and at a recovery pace that was 5mins I could have done to finish my coffee before a Teams meeting.
I remembered the ‘into Stanground and Fletton’ bits today for my last recovery ride of the week. I cant remember though what TR had originally planned as I swapped it in Alternates for Jumba King as I could recreate it quickly in TP to follow on %Max HR. Not that I strictly rose to the target HR, I just wanted something beeping at me to pass the time.
I took the shared foot/cycle way along side London Road south to Yaxley, then up through the village at which point lol, I remembered to switch the Varia on. Being 15mins or so into the ride at that point, I had to pull into a bus stop layby to switch the sensor detection back on manually in the main menu of the head unit. I then continued to Farcet, then headed to the Fens, before coming back to Stanground. This time I remembered to turn into it and cut across to Fletton, which was better speed/volume of trafficwise but there’s too many traffic lights to make it a regular route when I am actually trying to meet targets. From there I took another section of the London Road foot/cycleway to near the house.
Beautiful, sunny and calm weather today. Temperature was a bit too cold for my taste, between 14 and 16 degrees C below zero. Managed still to ride two hours on smaller roads like this.
A friend and I did a night ride on some quiet country roads and around a never finished nuclear plant last night. We’ve had a ton of rain lately, so the standing water on the roads and in the fields made for some cool scenery.
I had an endurance workout (Harrah) in my Masters Plan tonight and chose to my commute again. Lol its all change again weatherwise and was a mild 10/9 deg C so I stopped for a pic/vid of one of the houses in a village (it had been too cold previously).
Lol, in the office my colleagues were talking about a famous cat who likes to sit on the train gates/barriers at the station, and I said in 3 years I hadn’t saw it. Guess who I saw tonight
