A friend (new to structure) selected Low Volume plan with an A event end of June 2022. Plan to start 11/1/2021.
SSB1 (6 weeks)
SSB2 (6 weeks)
Build (8 weeks)
SSB1 (6 weeks)
Speciality (8 weeks)
Q: why the SSB1 after build and before specialty ? Does this violate the rule of specificity when getting closer to a peak event?
Not sure what you mean by “custom build program”. Are you referring to Plan Builder? Assuming you are, this is a typical calendar layout when one has plenty of time before their event/s. This is the schedule for me as well and I’m doing high volume.
After 12 weeks of base it’s time for Build. You’ve likely gotten all you can out of the Base phase, so Build will continue the adaptations. After eight weeks of build one has accumulated quite a bit of stress. Doing another Build would be too much. By going back to Base one can deload and help refresh the body and mind. Feeling a bit fresher than a post Build phase, one can hit Specialty hard for 8 weeks. Nailing the workouts leading towards an “A” event.
Right, I understand from a top down perspective, but after a full build - immediately into SSB1, the gains in especially Vo2 max power, and FTP, could degrade over the next 6 weeks. I don’t understand how that correlates with specificity of goal events. 8 weeks of specificity does minor building and mostly allows forthcoming freshness so top end is realized.
Why not do build 1 then back to SSB, then build 2 ?
That it often recommended as well and if you manipulate the TR question “What is your level of experience with interval training?” or your hours to train, you will likely get a different progression of training. Plan builder is attempting to lay out the best progression based on the information you feed it.
It’s an interesting question, and you can create arguments for and against. FWIW I’m not a coach but have one, and that progression doesn’t look right to me.

It could have something to do with the timing of the event and being so far out from the first initial 6 weeks of SSB1
You get to the Build phase and accomplish that, if you then would go right into specialty for 8 weeks you then have around 6 weeks until your event.
So the thought of doing a good Build, then toning it down a little back to SSB1 just to sort of maintain fitness and not loose much base you will still be able to keep the mentality both mentally and physically to get into a quality Specialty phase which then aligns with your event date.
And like bbarrera said, you can argue for and against it.
