Wout van Aert 2022 TDF Performance

Looking at the Netflix TDF documentary “Unchained” I can’t still can’t get over Wout van Aert’s performance at last years tour. What’s your estimate of his FTP last year? Mine: 520W

His weight is around 78 kg. 520 would put his w/kg around 6.6. My hunch is that is too high. I’d guess it is closer to 480.

470w and can use every last watt of it efficiently,

I’d guess maybe a punchy 440-460? If I remember correctly…the last guy who set the hour record was estimated to have a ~460ftp. I think it’s reasonable to assume he’s a bit south of there, perhaps the same.

He definitely has an elite FTP…but what really sets him apart is his ability to ride at a high pace but still maintain a wallop of a punch after 4-5 hours of riding. Best illustrated in stage 4 of last years TDF where he blew everyone out of the water with 10km to go on the final climb, and rode solo for the win.

Ganna has said that his FTP is up in the higher 400s, I’ve heard 485 bandied around, but he is c.80kg.

Yea I’d be sort of surprised if he had hour record level ftp while also having one of the best punches in pro racing…

Of course I suppose that is the sort of combination you meed to stand out as a freak in a world tour…

His power profile was leaked last year.
Credits to Charlie Carbs Cycling he made a video about it.

Geraint Thomas mentioned in his podcast that WvA told him he averaged ~370w for 3-4h in his crazy solo breakaway during the tour for additional context.

Just the sheer amount of torque required to drive the pedals round when doing 455W at 90rpm makes it amazing to me that any sub-80 kg person could do this for 1 hour.

I’m only 29 seconds away from matching his 30 second power! Almost there :joy:

That somehow seems tons more realistic actually than ever hitting 455 for an hour…that’s just madness.

Compare yourself to Wout!

What does that tell me? At the tender young age of sixty-one nobody is calling me about turning pro!

I remember Jonathan calling him a human motorcycle on one of the podcasts and that’s always felt about right :joy:

Lol All time (well at least since I’ve had a PM) the longest I’ve held 455w is 1min 35s back 2015 and now I can only hold it for 38s :joy:

Half the watts at double the age. My math says at half your age you’d have had the same ftp as wout. You just missed your window is all :joy:

455W in the last year? I’m at 80 seconds / 1-min 20-sec in the last year (my seasons in Intervals are calendar years):

Time to get busy progressing 455W beyond 80 seconds!

There you go! Lets call it 120 seconds, you only have 3480 seconds of progression in order to match Wout!!

This was almost 5 weeks ago.I bet I’m at a solid 121 now :joy:

3-sec of progression in 5 weeks? If you keep up that pace then you have roughly 1200 months to go! Hello TdF for @Abe_Froman in 10 years!

Fun with math!

Also just in time for 55+ masters races
