I’d like to share my recent opinion about Zycle and their newer version of smart trainer.
So, I ordered the ZDrive Max directly from Zycle. Turned out, I couldn’t mount my thru-axle bike on it. The adapters they sent with the product were wrong. The diameter of the sleeves that should fit in their nests was bigger than it should have been. The diameter of the wheel’s cap is 19 mm, but these adapters’ diameter is 20 mm. I just couldn’t believe they sent me a product that had never been tested with an actual thru-axle bike.
I contacted support, and they said they could send me smaller adapters within 1–2 months. I had to read it 2–3 times to make sure it wasn’t a joke. I refused and asked for a refund. They organized a pickup, and after a few days, they told me they could suddenly send the correct adapters and canceled the DHL pickup if I wanted. I didn’t want it because I had already ordered another smart trainer. Not to mention, the adapters were made of aluminum instead of coated steel, as used by other brands.
After all, I got my refund, but I was left wondering what all this was about and what the point was. Did they hope I’d only use QR? Then I would’ve believed everything was okay until I bought another bike with a thru-axle.
The casing was in contact with the belt-wheel, making friction sounds. The status indicator LED was mounted loose. The overall experience was like a cheap chinese product.
As I couldn’t even try it with my bike I was only able to check the connection to my laptop without pedaling. At first try, hardwired connection was okay, it simulated an ANT+ connection. Second try, that didn’t work, Rouvy / Trainer Road didn’t recognized it. Wireless ANT+ seemed to be okay, but by the hassle I got there, I just wanted to get rid of this piece of s**t. There was a little hint in the ANT device’s name that suggests it is a Bkool product.
I ordered it for €550 instead of its list price €700. Both price are ridicioulos for this. Now I have a Elite Direto XR which has no issues. I recommend the same to everyone, I mean it doesn’t have to be the same trainer I ordered, just buy a trusted brand’s device, like Elite, Tacx, JetBlack, Wahoo, etc.
