Homemade LMNT? [save money]

Unlike the homemade maurten or gel threads, this is a tad different.

After watching @Dr_Alex_Harrison make his own lemon habanero LMnT during the YT video of them reviewing LMNT, I was wondering how to make my own mango chili version. The tough part seems to be the mango, but even just adding in the “Slap Yo Mama” spice mix to a diluted Mortal Hydration Mango (and bumping the sodium back up with sodium citrate) ends up being 60¢ a serving. While that’s better than LMNT at $1.50 we’ve got to be able to do better? right.

Granted the Lemon Habanero is probably the easiest to replicate at home because lemon juice concentrate is readily available. Mango? These other fruit flavors? Not so much.

So Who’s got a great idea here. The spicy hydration mixes are my go to when it comes to breaking up the sweet cycle. Not savory, but still a good way to clean the sweet out of your mouth and fight that sugar fatigue.

Maybe Tajin? https://www.tajin.com/us/tajin-clasico/ or Chamoy?

We have a chain called Teapioca and they make a sweet and spicy slush called mango bobanada that might be the flavor you’re looking for? Teapioca Lounge Aquarena on Instagram: "Mango Bobanada is a refreshing twist on a popular Mexican dessert, blending mango, chamoy, and Tajín together with the option to add your favorite boba add-ons. It’s the perfect sweet and slightly spicy treat! 🥭 #spilltheteapioca #teapiocalounge #sanmarcostx #sanmarcostexas #sanmarcosfood #sanmarcosfoodies #txst #txstate #bobatime #bobaaddict #bubbletea #bobalover"

yeah not adding magnesium or potassium, but the sodium number is good to know. I’ll be using the overall sodium number from Saturday App and dividing it up, but having a benchmark is helpful. Maybe do 50:50 salt to sodium citrate, just to back off potential gut distress of the chloride.

The flavorings…those are the tough part. Some of the mango powders I’ve tried are amazingly WEAK. Takes 30g of the stuff to get any notable mango flavor.

In the end this will be for workouts where I start from home, because just like the carb drinks one thing the pre-packaged stuff does really well is a) well packaged, duh b) mixes better than home made.

I just use this stuff (True Lime Brand on Amazon). Cheap if you find the right flavor you like.

Pretty sure some of the flavors are stevia based, i drink a lot of them in my Nalgene during the day, and use them for flavoring in my bottles too.

I know you’re looking for powder but you do want to mix with it water?
Baking sites online or even markets might have mango extract and many other extracts you’re looking for.
It makes sense you want to make a bulk powder mix but finding good powder extract with the flavor “punch” you want. Might be hard to find and you might spend more money trying to taste them all.
