I’m sorry guys, are you encouraging people to ride a bike under the influence of narcotics?
Why not have a bottle of vodka while you’re at it?
It’s so weird this thread has survived this long.

under the influence of narcotics?
Marijuana is complex chemically and not yet fully understood, but it is not a narcotic.
OK Chad. You win on the key issue. Marijuana is not a narcotic.
It’s just a drug that impairs your ability to ride a bike. Which I’m not going to debate with anyone because the evidence is overwhelming. It’s also illegal to ride a bike under the influence in almost all jurisdictions. Not to mention it being incredibly stupid.
And, I wasn’t the one to revive this thread.
P.S. I don’t mind anyone smoking. It’s the same as alcohol to me.
Pretty sure I wasn’t encouraging anyone, to do anything.
I simply replied to another post saying that @Jerrodg was probably right. When all said and done, I don’t have any evidence at my immediate disposal to build a counter-argument.
We’ve all had a chance to weigh in with our stance on this matter, now it will be interesting to see more studies for long term effects as cannabis use is slowly starting to become normalized like alcohol. Moderators have done a good job with allowing this discussion, it’d be pretty hypocritical to heavily moderate this topic while allowing the beer thread to flourish.
What I don’t understand is why would one smoke something and risk compromising ones lungs aka engine. Cycling is an aerobic sport.
I think it’s akin to smoking tabaco, isn’t it?? My thinking is nothing goes into the lungs other than O2. From what I understand there are a variety of ways to partake in the use of marijuana other than smoking it.
There is no real proof of lung damage. While purely anecdotal take a look at Michael Phelps. If his lungs were diminished from smoking pit I doubt he could have won even a single gold medal.

Not quite, but I’m also not convinced it’s anything close to harmless either. As you’ve indicated, ingesting it takes away that variable.
There is no real proof of lung damage.
What is the source of this interesting bit of info?
People will argue about lung damage all day. My experience from being a heavy user to quitting all together is that I do not cough nearly as much on hard efforts… especially on cold days.
My experience was primarily with traditional smoking, and some vaping. Never liked ingesting very much.
I’m sure you’re aware that smoking is not he only way of getting THC into your system…
Yeah, considering that his post (which you replied directly to) finishes with the following statement:
From what I understand there are a variety of ways to partake in the use of marijuana other than smoking it.
I think he is aware of those options.
User here. Recreational racer, cat 3, do an average of 10,000kms per year. never consumed during racing (or at work), but have known scores who do it for both. am healthy and work in the field of education/tech/languages. Some sativas work almost like doping in that they increase the watts, respiratory function, and dull the lactic acid build up. i have zero science to back this up but 8 times out of 10 the workout was successful, but this is not a practice i’d recommend. due to allergies i have asthma so i stopped the flowers and turned to edibles for sleeping and recovery. those work really well, and zero side effects. this topic should be discussed at length, but folks should check their comedic agenda at the door.

It may be, but the dosage is dramatically different. Some folks do smoke cannabis like a cigarette smoker but most (including myself) smoke a negligible amount in comparison. If I smoked the equivalent of one cigarette I would be wayyy too high, and most tobacco smokers smoke a lot more than one a day. A puff or two does it for many users. Again, not everyone.

Not trying to be a jerk but technically almost 80% is nitrogen.

With pro-marijuana legislation sweeping the nation, it's time to ask this very serious question.
Interesting take. Cycling is a cardiovascular sport but also usually a race of attrition. If you don’t think there are benefits than you need to broaden your horizons.
I’d have to be stoned too, in order to enjoy running.
I’ve recently found THC to be useful for sleep, and as a result possibly recovery as well. Taking 5-10mg of a commercial indica gel capsule (occasionally) makes it much easier to fall asleep. I also sleep deeper at night - will sleep through the night rather than waking up every hour.
This is fitting with more recent research that suggests short term/non regular THC usage decreases sleep latency and increases stage 4 sleep (though decreases REM).
I think because of this improved sleep I notice I recover better than otherwise. Have been able to increase my sustainable volume by 2-4h a week in this time period as a result. However, this is only a one or twice a week max sort of thing. More regular use is suggested to have detrimental effects on sleep based on limited study.
I don’t think it would make any difference if I didn’t regularly have problems with sleep at baseline. I do shift work and independent of that would typically have 1-2 nights a week of extremely poor sleep where I was basically up all night. A good night would still involve waking up 2-4x per night.
Gel caps avoid the cough from smoking, and also seems to avoid the post-weed “hangover” I’d gotten in the past with smoking/vaping - where you just feel stupid the next day.
Took once on the trainer for curiosity. Do not recommend - it made things really drag out and seem way longer than it actually was.
My friend smokes even before swimming in pool, he’s kind of sportsman, it’s okey
The only good time it’s good to medicate (IMO) while riding is if you’re somewhere and it’s all about fun. No structure, no intervals; a good way to get you in tune with nature. Now I sound like a hippie.
My personal use is for anxiety and sleep issues, it helps so I continue to use it.
