Some people report finding an elevated flow state with cannabis and riding (think mountain bikers), I love the two, but I keep them separate as I am not one of those people. It makes me ride overly cautiously, tired, and hungry - all things I don’t need help with during a ride. I’ve enjoyed it during a period of my life where all my rides were z2 and after work, it was really nice for that, but the dosing is critical. Less is always best.
Each to there own as they say and I have no problem with people using it for the reasons mentioned on this thread but since CTT are part of UK antidoping then any UK TT rider would be nuts to use it…although CBD products seem to be allowed but not encouraged…THC is now classed as Substances of abuse…whatever the definition I think the general rule is if you compete…then no…if not - well it’s your life
Everyone is different but here’s what I think about heavy/regular (daily, multiple times) use with smoking and vaping:
1.) 10-15% FTP gone, probably more with concentrate vaping than smoking IME, not as bad as cigarettes tho
2.) Less pain/anxiety overall
3.) Over long term, moderately to noticeably less restful sleep
4.) No difference to weight loss/diet
5.) Overall lower energy levels throughout the day
6.) SIGNIFICANTLY reduced sex drive
Generally speaking I’d suggest using as sparingly as possible because your tolerance will increase and you’ll start to get side effects when you use too much too often.
Idk if I agree with any of that but it might be that way for someone else. Hopefully I’m not coming off the wrong way, but you have to think general life/work stress can also cause all of those same problems. (Besides number 2)
I assume this is a list from your personal experience? I wouldn’t argue much from 1-5, but I’ve always laughed when folks say it affects their sex drive. It’s always done the opposite for me (luckily). Also, you remove much of the negative effects by ingesting.
Ditto, I know people who use THC with improved libido as the primary factor.
Of course the guy with the Subtitles logo as avatar posts in the THC thread haha
As you said, everyone is different. I’m going to address each of these from my own personal experience:
- I’m sure this is dose-dependent. I typically take 1-2 puffs per day, and I feel like I have very strong lungs and aerobic fitness for the training volume I do. Folks who hit their pens or smoke repeatedly (“I smoke two joints in the morning / I smoke two joints at night”
) probably have different results.
- Pain yes, anxiety no. Many friends would agree with you in this one but I get more anxious (and yet I still persist
)
- True for me in an acute sense, but not a chronic (harhar) sense. I’ve always found it interesting how the same compound can elicit such dramatically different results in different people. I have lots of friend who like to smoke as a sleep aid. For me, it gets my mind going too fast, and I have learned to abstain after 7pm or so on work nights. I sleep well in general with this bumper in place.
- The munchies are real. I definitely overeat more than I would without cannabis in my life, and I’m sure I’d be a bit leaner.
- True for me when I was younger and would “wake and bake” on occasion. Not an issue if I time it right.
- I genuinely wish this were true for me these days. With busy schedules and little ones, my wife and I rarely get the opportunity for intimacy, and when we do she is often too touched-out from nursing the baby to want to engage. If there were a way to turn down the desire on that front, I would be all about it! In my younger days, it always acted as a profound enhancement in that respect.
Using it occasionally and especially for women it seems like it can be an aphrodisiac.
WRT the post above I’m not talking 1-2 puffs a day more like 1-2 infused 1g pre rolls per day lol.
Anyway all I’m saying is if you go too far there are negative effects for sure.
Hm, if you can pick out the Subtitles logo I’m guessing you might be a fan too? Drum ‘n’ Bikes! And, yeah - I like cannabis too. TeeBee is a legend, one of my favorite labels.
yea, got really into dnb around 2004 - golden age of neuro funk. early noisia, phace, calyx & teebee, break etc. was a heavy weed smoker back then too, but stopped smoking 2 years ago. still listening to dnb though - best music for hard intervals
Speaking my language, that’s about the best era of dnb for me too, I love the earlier neurofunk. I still listen to Noisia a lot, they’re finally disbanding but I keep current with the weekly show. Boh!
I used to dj a lot during that time period, great memories, and yes dnb is great for banging out intervals!
Really good take and totally mirrors my limited experience. An occasional 5mg gummy, esp. with CBD, is absolutely incredible for sleep and recovery and is probably the best use by far. I’d suggest it to anyone with sleep disturbances, just don’t use it every day and build up a tolerance. Melatonin is also good to fall asleep but often results in 3am wake up for me and difficult to get back to sleep.
The science is compelling for the myriad medical benefits of both CBD and THC together. But I think the marijuana health halo is making certain friends of mine overdo the smoking, which is probably doing them more harm than good. Edibles, tinctures (at least ones where you can trust the dosage) are a much better alternative!
Yes, I have a friend who would be the first to admit that although he feels really flowy sensations, he’s actually moving really slowly on the downhills.
he feels really flowy sensations, he’s actually moving really slowly on the downhills.
But hey 99% of us are out here to have a good time, not race against a clock.
5 mg edible or a few hits on a dry flower vape is the perfect amount to get the right headspace. It helps leave the workday behind and appreciate the finer things in an afternoon ride with the trail flow, weather, and any company.
I agree on the idea that fun and enjoyment doesn’t have to mean riding fast! It’s hard to type out all of the layers of meaning when you’re trying to keep it short and sweet. The missing context of that story is that we were mountain biking on moderately technical trails, and there is a need to be at the “right speed”. Coming into a feature like a rocky section or wooden feature with not enough speed (or even too much speed) can be dangerous. He feels he is riding better without it, as he’s riding with more confidence. YMMV, of course - no judgements here!
Oh damn, yeah that might do it. Either you’ve got a crazy tolerance or the stuff you’re getting isn’t that good.
From experience as a former heavy user (6-8g per week) of over 25+ years, I also used THC as a libido booster/enhancer. But once the body becomes used to having that enhancement for said activities it becomes dependent. Once the drug is gone the drive will take a dip. Then the anxiety starts. Then the usage goes back up. Consider it sex doping. Hopefully it’s clear how this ends up.
Anyone ever try a little THC on the trainer? I wonder how it influences RPE and performance.
