Protein supplement that’s easy on the gut

On the podcast Jonathan had mentioned he was looking for a protein supplement that’s easy on the gut. I’d like to know as well if anyone has a recommendation. Thanks!

Maybe one of these

I’ve had the best luck with Naked Pea protein. I’m lactose intolerant so the whey versions don’t work well for me.

I think that’s a source, adding bacon or foie gras would be a supplement.

That’s a sauce, adding garlic butter would be supplemental charge.

Protein, MCTs and prebiotics.

Once you start eating more protein, you get to a certain g/kg you’ll get protein farts. Also, if you have an intolerance not an allergy to a food that can cause an upset stomach. Maybe that’s what he’s talking about.

IMO, eating meat of any kind can help and vegan protein powder may help also. Stay away from pepper seasonings, vinegars and hot sauces. Use some yogurt marinades or sauces that will help the gut.

Exactly. Too much dairy and I’ll get the toots. I think I’ll try the pea based powders and see how it goes.

I do not tolerate whey (even isolate) well. Pea based protein shake is my go to now, no problems at all.

When I took regular whey protein my toilet visits weren’t very nice.

I actually started adding fibres to my shakes (inulin, psyllium and flax seed fibres) up to about 5-8g per shake and this really made my bowel movement significantly better.

I might try this for the entire base and built period up to my A events.

Don’t forget that plant based proteins do not contain complete amino acid profiles whereas whey products do.

If dairy is an issue then clear whey resolves a lot of these issues for people.

It’s not that they don’t contain them at all - pea protein is considered “complete” - it’s that they don’t contain them in sufficient amounts relative to whey to support your diet as a sole or primary source of protein. The essential amino acids that are present in relatively low quantities in pea protein (compared to whey products) are present in sufficient amounts in real food. So if you’re not on a vegan diet, and you eat meat, eggs, etc., there’s a pretty good chance you get enough methionine, leucine, etc., when combined with pea protein.

Once I kill this current bag of whey isolate, I’m going to try out pea protein supplementation for the first time to help ease some gut discomfort I experience, even with whey isolate. Personally going to try that Ryse supplement (the pea version) I linked above (author reports no conflict of interest, lol).

I’ve been successfully using this for years now, after struggling with gut discomfort and gas from regular WPI. It has lactase in it, allegedly making it easier to digest.

This is not fact-based but I suspect that a component of gut discomfort experienced with protein powders is attributable to the artificial sweeteners added so the companies can market “2 g carbs”.

This is the protein powder I use all the time in my breakfast pancakes, oatmeal or even protein shakes. I have an intolerance to dairy and if I have too many dairy products during the week, whey protein can mess with my stomach. Never had problems with this and it’s 3rd party tested, also safe for sport through NSF.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations and links. I’ve also greatly cut out dairy from my diet and the improvement is remarkable. So, based on that, I’m assuming my issue is with whey based protein powders & bars. I continue to eat other animal products like eggs and meat so I should have a fairly rounded diet as long as I keep up with protein and switch to a pea based protein supplement.

I’m with @FrankTuna on this one. I’ve been using Naked Pea and Naked Mass for years and have never had any issues.

I think like most things, your gut might need to warm up to things over time. :man_shrugging:

Except you linked the whey version. This is the link to the plant protein version.

I haven’t tried Ryse, but the cost per gram is rather high ($2.15 per 20g protein serving) compared to the Naked Pea protein at $0.76 per 27g protein serving. Granted you get MCT and prebiotic as well, but IMO Ryse is too expensive.
