We did a fish and chips stop on the waterfront 40 miles from the end of a century and misheard the order and ordered 3 extra portions of fish instead of donuts.
Climbing up the last big hill, I was burping up fish and oil

Rockstar recovery. It’s non carbonated and can be consumed in 20 seconds. Provides very little in calories though, if you wanted liquid calories.
Those horrible orange crackers with “peanut butter” in them
Was looking for a clif bar, bought a payday instead. The extra saltiness hit the spot and is a go to. Plus there’s no chocolate coating to get your hands gross. If there were a Reese’s Fast Break with a payday bar housing, it would be great.
Payday and a coke…stuff I wouldnt touch otherwise.
In Canada, so Tim Hortons seem to be everywhere…nothing beats a Maple Cream Donut mid ride.
Gotta get some more non-US folk in here!
veggie pasties, solo/lemon squash, sour gummies, vegemite scrolls, pineapple lumps, and anything from the treasure chest of frozen icy treats.
Bought one of those canned preworkout drinks once, thinking it would be comparable to a regular energy drink. Gnarliest aftertaste ever and spent the next 45 minutes being violently itchy.
ginger gummy bears. Helps with GI issues and they aren’t as sweet as normal ones.
I am the only American I know who love maple glazed donuts. Best because they’re always left for me.
Salt Skum:
Swedish, but I get them in Norway. There is no better trash fuel, you will not change my mind.
Iced latte in a tin is a perfect combo of sugar and caffeine. I also discovered a craving for flavoured kefir (I know that may not count as trash but it really hit the spot). Donuts, snickers bars, ice cream. Custard tarts!
What’s Payday?
I LOVE maple glazed - especially with bacon topping!
Just plain water for me thanks… (Evian preferably)
some of these US gas station foods are amazing. I reckon I would go like a rocket off these compared to my paultry offering here
Add me to the list of Americans who love maple! @Jhardisk - I don’t eat pork any more, but if you get to a VooDoo donuts, the maple bacon is fantastic.
I have to ask. What is Salt Skum? As an American, scum is not a good word to use with food!
Nah, it’s just low-grade jelly that tastes a bit odd compared to other chocolate bars.
Sweet salted licorice, “skum” means “foam” in English. (I am a fellow murican so the name cracks me up also )
If I want something salty, I get corn nuts. I prefer ranch flavor. I like them because they are tough enough to put in my jersey/top tube bag without getting crushed.
Otherwise for go-tos I always go for a donut or baked good of some sort. I used to drive semi-truck in college so I have advanced skills in picking out gas stations that have proper “homemade” donuts or baked goods.
This thread, right here, right now, absolutely wins “TR Thread of the Year”.
I love that all of our serious fructose, wax boiling, Cd, watt saving, leg shaving, PL, TSS bull-crap goes out the window when we start talking what REAL people actually eat on their bikes.
Much love.
Haven’t they dropped the sugar content lately? How does it compare to other sugary drinks now?
The best part of a gas station refill is the variety. Mix it up with something salty and something sweet, if there are chips I haven’t seen before I’ll probably try them.
We ordered fries at a stop on a 15-hour day, they hit the spot but when I looked back at the end of the trip I realized we were at the gas station for 72 minutes. They weren’t worth the extra hour of riding after dusk.
Salted Carmel Milky Way was a random find that is now my go-to candy bar, the big chunks of sea salt are a really wonderful addition. On a more interesting find was a Mountain Dew cake.
I had some Lunchables mini-Pizzas during a bikepacking race. They were glorious, although not mobile and required me to sit to eat. Between those and Dr. Pepper, life is good!
