SIS Gels Consistency

Tell me if this is normal for the product before I purchase any more.

I purchased two boxes of SIS gels for the first time earlier this summer, but due to a lot of off bike vacationing, didn’t start using them until August. One box (specifically Berry + Caffiene) had a very strange consistency, not smooth but almost like it was curdled. I opened a few more out of the box and they are similar. They other box was the slightly thin gel I expected.

If this is how the caffeine gels are normally, I’ll stick with other brands. August was the last month of the best before date, which is what you may get buying off amazon. However, I would not have thought they would have turned out like that overnight. Was this just a bad box or perhaps stored poorly. Thanks.

I have some like that before. A bit lumpy? I’m still here :grinning:. I didn’t mind them, no after effects.

That’s not my experience. I can taste the caffeine, but to me, they have the same consistency as the non caffeinated ones.

Agreed, the taste was fine and I suffered not ill effects, but I found it off-putting, especially in August heat. Have you experienced it with any other SIS gels? I want to like them because the thinner texture makes them easier to swallow in a hurry.

Thanks for the report!

Usually they put products on sale when their “best before” date is 30-60 days. If you bought products from sale probably they had very short shelf life already. I also experienced it once with Turbo gels. Turbo already has a challenging taste and in my case mint flavour was completely segregated, it was really disgusting but i survived.
Otherwise their products are pretty good as long as stored correctly.

Yes, it wasn’t just caffeine ones. I tend to buy them buy big box. I have often had them when they are a few months “out of date” they have been fine. I eat them quickly so by the time I noticed I had disgusted them :grinning:

I had the same issue buying the “almost expired” ones and eating them past their shelf date. They get lumpy when expired. The packaging will puff up too.

I had the same “lumpy” texture on some of the caffein gels. Didn’t seem right to me so I didn’t eat them. I was frustrated with the expiration dates being so close on some of the boxes I received. I ordered boxes of 30 on sale that expired the next month. I contacted them and complained and they credited me back part of the price.

Not sure if it’s intended but it’s not a problem. I stocked up on double espresso packs a while ago, I use them well beyond their best before, the texture is a bit lumpy but I’ve had neither GI distress nor any other issues.

I buy a load of these gels, by the box, and often the nearly expired ones as they sell them cheap. I’ve had some in the past which have the slightly lumpy texture. They are fine though. I’ve never had any problem at all with eating them.
Just think of it as a novelty texture and keep pedaling.

I did notice that mine where puffed up also. I can’t help but think that some sort of fermenting is going on.

Ha! I am ashamed to say my thought was significantly more, uh, juvenile than “hmm, that is novel.”

I’ve found that if you shake each gel for ~5s before putting them in your pockets for a ride it tends to take most if not all of the lumpy texture out.
