TrainerRoad and Zwift together?

Pair all your devices in Zwift, including trainer control.

Launch and pair only your power meter (not the trainer) in TR and load the workout.

Follow the guidance of the TR workout and you will have to shift and adjust power just like outside.

Is anyone using zwift to do TR workouts and how.

Yes. I run both on a Win10 PC, with ANT+ and BT dongles (one of each). Start Z, pair the trainer (and HR and cadence in my case) on ANT+, disable trainer control; start TR, pair the trainer (and HR and cadence) on BT. Minimize TR at the bottom of the screen, pick my workout, go. It just works.

Both apps remember your last connections, except Z tries to connect the trainer control every time. You have to disconnect it every time. I also found that starting TR first does not work very well in my setup, TR takes a hold of both ANT+ and BT, so Zwift cannot connect. I see this behavior if I try to restart Zwift in the middle of a TR workout (to select a new route, for example): Zwift cannot find either the BT or ANT+ channel at that point.

I noticed tonight on iOS, Zwift didnā€™t try and control my trainer by default. Maybe the have set it to remember the setting or just a good bug !

I know the Win app is ā€œstickyā€ and holds my prior setting each time I set or change it.

Would be nice if they were consistent across platforms, but no guarantees.

Yupā€¦my program defaults to however I last used it.

I made a quick YouTube video

This is without BLE4.0 capability. Using 2 ANT+ Dongles

I run both all the time. I use a CABLE ANT+ to BT converter to convert and feed my PM/HR signals to Zwift on my Apple TV, then connect through their native BT (and my KICKR or InsideRideā€™s BT) to my iPad for TR. Works great.

Just had a surprisingly good experience running an ā€œoutsideā€ TR workout via my Garmin 830 and smart trainer.

The garmin even power-matched so I got my power readings from my assioma pedals whilst my elite zumo set the resistance. I didnā€™t expect this - I had assumed that Iā€™d be stuck with my zumo power on the Garmin recorded ride.

I was really impressed with how good ERG mode was - well done Garmin :+1:

Obviously, being Garmin there had to be something ā€œoffā€ which in this case was that even though the power ā€œtraceā€ used power data from the pedals the power reading and ā€œtarget barā€ above it used my trainers power which is 30w low ( I didnā€™t spindown).

So I had two graphics showing power on the same screen - one saying I was on target and one saying i was low. Pleasantly surprised my Garmin was using power data from my pedals to set the resistance on my trainer though.

Just linked zwift to my pedals and HRM and off I went - bonus is that I got power balance and cycling dynamics data too :+1:

Plans are great in TR, but with all the Zwift racing going on and the WRTL TT racing, is it possible to do both. Definitely hooked on the Zwift racing and Iā€™ve only done a couple now. With the lack of racing going on outside, this gives you the racing fix for sure. You can certainly push harder in a race than any workout. Guess Iā€™ll have to have the two subscriptions for now and decide when the TR expires. The world is on Zwift it seems!

  • Yes. Similar to including outside racing or hard group rides, look to swap out a TR ā€œhardā€ workout for a ride or race of your choosing (outside, Zwift, whatever) and keep a general plan rolling with the ā€œfunā€ stuff mixed in.
  • Arguably, they have different purposes and may well lead to different feeling and responses for a range of riders.
  • There is no single right answer. Races and Training each have their purpose and place. Mixing and matching is up to each rider based on their goals and preferences.
  • Quite a few indeed. But there are a large number that have tried it and chosen not to use it. Some prefer other apps like Rouvy, FulGaz and such while some just use various videos and other entertainment.
  • Zwift saw a lot of late ā€œwinterā€ season growth with an influx from the COVID bomb. But that has dwindled greatly since reopenings and better weather have arrived. It will be interesting to see what the next Northern Hemisphere Winter season looks like. We might not even hit the peak Zwift counts we hit from this last season, due to the very unique circumstances.

Either way, itā€™s a nice option and one that works for many to help with their riding, training and racing needs.

Awesome! Thanks. Great idea to mix the outside workouts to keep on a plan. Thanks for the feedback and response.

Would like some help with my zwift/tr setup. I know I am lazy but I trust you more than myself. I want to ride the trainerroad workouts while watching my avatar move in zwift. I want trainerroad to control the trainer with ERG mode. Can I have zwift running on my PC and trainerroad on my android phone? I have a Garmin Edge 520, can I use that somehow? Iā€™ll just write a list of what stuff I have and if someone is feelin smart, give me an idea of a doable solution :):

PC-laptop with ant+ usb-thingy.
Android phone with bluetooth
Tacx Flux S
Garmin Edge 520
4iiii power meter.

I was thinking about pushing the tr workouts to the garmin but will that be able to control my trainer? Is it best to have TR to work with the trainer and garmin communicating via bluetooth and the powermeter and laptop(zwift) via ant+?

Firstly for Zwift you want to connect to your power meter only - donā€™t connect your trainer. This is important, make sure you only have one program or device trying to control your trainer. You will want to do this via ant+ so as not to hog the bluetooth signal that your phone might need. (not sure if the 4iiii supports multiple bluetooth connections? - many dont).

Then for TR you have options. You can either run trainerroad on your android phone or push the workout to your garmin - both will be able to control your trainer for erg mode. Iā€™d suggest that running the TR workout from your phone will be easiest.

You made it easy. I think even I will be able to sort it out now :). I have to say I am happily surprised phone/garmin can control the trainer.

Zwift - Power meter, laptop and ant+.
TR - Smart trainer, phone and bluetooth.

How about the heart rate monitor? Can I connect it to both programs at the same time?

Thank you for the help

Depends on what HRM you have.

Assuming you have one that broadcasts both bluetooth and ant+ you will be fine - again remember that some HRMs only support one bluetooth connection even though they can support many ant+ connections.

In your case ant+ for PC/Zwift and bluetooth for Phone/TR will be OK.

Is the 4iiii bluetooth too? If so you can also connect that to your phone to use powermatchā€¦

soā€¦
Zwift - Power meter, laptop and ant+.
TR - power meter + Smart trainer, phone and bluetooth.

My garmin 830 will also power match but I dont know about the 520.

Iā€™d say there is zero chance of that happeningā€¦the key metric, IMO, is where the Peak Zwift falls between2019 and 2020. There is no way Zwift retains all the subscribers they gained due to COVID19, but it should still be significantly higher than where they were 2019.

Businesses that enjoyed large bumps due to COCID19 should not assume that they will be able to anniversary (let alone grow) over that number next yearā€¦unless nothing improves, I guess. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I use both TR and Zwift. On TR workouts with shorter intervals I just keep TR on the screen (iPhone mirrored to Apple TV). For workouts with longer sweetspot intervals, etc., I find that having Zwift on distracts me. I have a Kickr Bike, which can connect via BT to two devices. So I can run TR on my ipad and Zwift on the Apple TV. In terms of controlling the intervals, this works great. The only issue I have is that it makes the cadence readings on TR get wonky a lot of the time (not always). Cadence will constantly jump from the actual cadence up to 170 or so and back and forth. Other than a minor annoyance, it of course affects the average cadence reading for the interval. Anyone experience anything similar on their set-ups and any solutions? Thanks

  • Most smart trainers are ā€œguessingā€ cadence based on the typical ebb and flow of the power curve from the rider. Particularly smooth riders at some power levels can ā€œhideā€ cadence that from these effects.

If you really care about cadence accuracy, the best option is a dedicated cadence sensor.
