Hey guys – I’ve started researching apps for tracking my nutrition, and of course, there’s tons of them. I think it makes more sense to ask TR users what they use, seeing as there’s overlap in the needs we have as users. So…what’s your go-to for this?
Not currently tracking but am now off the bike with an injury so i might start again soon.
I used My Fitness Pal when you could scan barcodes in the free version and then switched to Lose It and am still using the free version.
I think cronometer is great if you’re vegan/wfpb and want a lot of detail about nutrients and amino acids.
After using MFP for many years, I recently found Lose It to be much easier to use on a day to day basis as far as data entry and scanning labels. I do have a major complaint though. I’ve never figured out how it uses the integration with Garmin to “add calories to the day” because you did a big ride. It recognizes that you did the ride, but it doesn’t add the extra available calories after the ride, so I spend the rest of the day trying to figure out if and when it’s going to adjust, which can leave me trying to starve myself even though I know I should have an extra 1,000 calories or more available. It eventually led to me just not tracking even though I paid for membership.
I have Garmin as well and I don’t have that issue. It pulls calories from Garmin after I sync my 530 to my Garmin Connect App, then I open my Lose It app while GC is open. You might check if you have a setting in Loseit that chooses to ignore activity calories.
I’m about to try Carbon diet coach
It logs the activity, it just chooses not to give me the extra calories until some magical moment when it decides I do (or do not) deserve to get them. Often at the end of the day, which is far too late to impact my caloric decisions that day.
I’ve been using MyFitnessPal for about 10 years (free version). Seamless and accurate integration with Garmin (IME).
Weird, so it will add the activity but not the calories until maybe later? That’s odd - I’d try and fiddle with the app from your computer- I find it’s much easier to configure. I redid my goal recently and there were a few settings that I adjusted and it pulls data very accurately.
Lose It doesn’t work that way for me. However I sync workouts to Apple Health using RunGap. Then Lose It pulls it in via Health.
The clock.
I’ve tried all sorts over the years and nada. Now I’m trying the clock. Eat between 7am and 7pm.
I’m on iOS, and I use Cronometer.
if you aren’t in the US loseit, chronometer, MFP are enot very useful as they only seem to have USDA database
I use an opensource app called waistline. i am eu based and althouh you cannot integrate exercice calories. it uses the openfood database and you can get your own api key and add the USDA database as well and basically any food i scan is available.
it does not try to sell you stuff or hide it behind a pay wall. like per instance MFP food scanner is now a paid feature.
note I have no link with waistline or anything but i highly recommend it.
Cron-o-meter is definitely the best one. I started with MyFitnessPal and it was just…bleh? It worked don’t get me wrong but it was very advertisey and pushy. Cronometer is all about that tracking, and they recently came out with recurring food and custom “meals” (in addition recipes and foods) that are great. I’m on a 122 day streak with it and no longer get hangry, have my weight right where I want it, and hit my macros each day! Cannot recommend it enough. Definitely worth reading their post on data sources to understand the different options for recording; I’m a fan of just finding the closest item to what I’m eating in NCCDB and then getting all the correct data. Also, get a food scale if you’re really serious about this! Mine lives on the counter.
my culculator on my phone
Weird bug. I’ve been using it for 3-4 months and it always credits my rides immediately after it uploads from my Garmin. Care to post some screenshots? Or maybe try linking Strava instead.
Do you have a Garmin watch?
Apple Watch. But have Garmin synced in the app. So if I go for a ride with my Garmin it syncs. I haven’t had any issues with either.
Edit: So I went to double check and I don’t have Garmin connected oddly. I have my Apple Watch, Apple Health, and my Withings scale. So it must be syncing everything from Apple Health. The Garmin activity does show up in the Lose It app and I have been getting credit for the calories.
This is from my ride yesterday. Garmin said I burned 2,500 calories. So in line with what I got credited with walking around the rest of the day to make up around 200 calories.
Same here, Apple Watch and rides recorded on a Garmin 840.
I’m not currently using Lose It, however I did try using the LoseIt-Garmin sync before switching to RunGap-Health-LoseIt. Its been a long time, and seem to recall having an issue either interpreting Lose It - it can be a little confusing, or when Garmin synced. I don’t remember now.
If I remember correctly, this view of calories:
displayed the behavior you mentioned. While this:
would always show the current under/over on calories.
If I remember correctly.
I started this hunt last year and ended up using MyNetDiary. It has a very good database and tracking functionality for macros. It also has diet plans and recipes that I’ve actually found useful. One thing that took some getting used to is that Garmin doesn’t sync over the calories from a workout, instead it syncs Garmin Active Calories and compares it to the you calorie budget. I suppose this makes more sense as it more accurately accounts for nonexercise time as well.
